The Square of the Bibliotheca (the National Library) in Valletta with an 18th Century Carnival in full swing. Carnival is one of the oldest celebrations adopted from Pagan Rome. Three days of bacchanalia before the austerity of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Carnivals always produced sumptuous costumes and mysterious masks.
