The final in the trilogy, this volume looks at the three cities of Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua, which together are identified as a unique, historical entity known as Cottonera. The Three Cities stand in succession on the water’s edge of the sheltered creeks of the Grand Harbour, and this is where the Knights of St John settled before Valletta was built, leaving a number of treasures in the form of art and architecture. Its waterfront was the main base for the Order’s galleys and boasts some of the finest harbour architecture found in Mediterranean ports. All three cities carry a second name, an honour which the knights felt should remind posterity of their valour during the 1565 siege. These cities were severely damaged in the bombing blitz of the Second World War due to their proximity to the British Naval base, however photographs of what remains and what has been reconstructed depict that they truly remain an important part of Malta’s heritage.
