The Age of Elegance
Watercolour print by Kenneth Zammit Tabona
“The Age of Elegance” depicts Palazzo D’Aurel in Gudja, which is by far and away the most beautiful of Malta’s aristocratic demesnes. It is surrounded by splendid oval courtyards and formal gardens in which a mythical round tower built of stone and glass called Xlejli, dominates the surrounding landscape. The artist has recreated a possible scene in which the lords and ladies of the Palazzo are enjoying an informal concert in the main courtyard. The palace owes most of its sophistication to the Marchesa Bettina Moscati Sceberras, who was Lady-in-Waiting in Palermo to the Habsburg Maria Carolina Queen of Naples.
