Description
Please note: We are offering the second volume free on this title
This first volume gives full credit to the architectural contribution of the Order of St John known also as the Knights of Malta. It covers the years 1530 to 1680. The emphasis is not only on the strengthening of Malta, but also on the embellishing of her towns and cities.
It is not only academics but also larger groups who are interested in chivalric history, fine architecture and the arts in general. This book focuses, perhaps more than ever, on the remaining treasures in stone left by the past, the past of the Order of St John in Malta.
This volume presents a general cross-section of secular buildings erected throughout Malta, starting from the early Birgu constructions and moving on to buildings erected near our dateline of 1680. It must be pointed out that changes and modifications to 16th and 17th-century buildings went on well beyond 1680 and these have been recorded in the relevant descriptions to try and present a comprehensive picture of their development. Apart from palaces, convents and houses, one of the items is a fortified gate which has been included because the fortifications were meant to defend homes and habitations, the main idea behind the choice of buildings.
Both volumes include a foreword by HMEH Frà Matthew Festing, Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta and dedicated the memory of his predecessor Frà Andrew Bertie.
ELEGANT LARGE SIZE VOLUME, HARDBOUND WITH LAMINATED JACKET AND HAND-MADE SLIPCASE.
